Real Chocolate Milk

real food chocolate milk

Lately I’ve been buying raw milk from the markets. Since it’s not cheap and I have a bit of a history of letting milk go to waste, I’ve been making chocolate milk as a snack or dessert.

Commercial drinking chocolate powder can have a bunch of additives like whey powder, beverage whitener, emulsifier and anti-caking agent . This recipe has only four ingredients, which are all real foods, plus you can control the level of sweetness.

I like it very chocolatey and not so sweet, but feel free to add more sweetener if you feel like it. By using less processed sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, it is still healthy.

Ingredients (serves 1)

1 Tbsp cocoa powder

1 tsp honey or real maple syrup

Pinch of salt

1 cup full cream milk

2 tsp cream (optional)

Method

Place cocoa powder, honey and salt together in a mug or glass. Add around 2 tsp of hot water and mix to form a paste.

Add the milk, mix well and top with cream if desired.

Enjoy 🙂

  1. I love the idea of maple syrup x

  2. Full cream milk. Does that mean 3.5 percent milk fat? That’s what we call whole milk here.

    • Haha I thought I was quite up with the US terms for food, but this is the second one in two days! Yep, full cream milk is the same as whole milk. I actually prefer the name whole milk because full cream makes it sound like it is mostly cream when it’s only 3.5% !

  3. Wow, so many australianisms coming up in the comments!

I made hot choc today, but no sweetener (actually I remember grabbing the maple, but not sure I stirred it in? I was baking at the time, and didn’t even finish my mug full). I bought a itty bitty saucepan at the op shop, and did it on the stove. It was ok, save for some cocoa getting stuck to the base 🙁 And no cream…

    • Did you make it with just cocoa powder and milk? I keep trying that but it’s too bitter for my taste 🙁

      • Yep, silly me! But I’m trying to cut sugar, as it’s the quickest way to get my tummy flab in check :-p

Oh, one comment about the new site – I liked the links to past and future posts at the bottom of the post I was on (when I comment on a new post, I like to then go back and check your replies on others). They don’t seem to show up anymore though? If that’s what you prefer, that’s fine, but I thought I’d let you know!

  4. My mom taught me this method once when we ran out of the prepared stuff. I was surprised it was possible – I must have thought they didn’t make cocoa in the old days! This is similar to the recipe on the Fry’s Cocoa tin (except theirs uses white sugar).

    • When I first moved out of home I made potato bake using a powdered packet sauce. It didn’t occur to me to use real milk and cream! It’s funny the things we assume can’t be made from scratch 🙂

  5. Love it! Thanks for sharing
