Homemade Sweet Potato Fries

When I was an undergraduate student I often had hot chips for dinner – not the healthiest or most balanced meal! I still enjoy chips as a side dish but now make my own from scratch, so I can control the ingredients and make them even more delicious. 

These chips are made with sweet potatoes, which is an extra bonus because sweet potatoes are one veggie that you don’t need to worry about buying organic. After my night on the town recently I woke up craving some greasy food, so made a batch of these and  they were amazingly good paired with some homemade aioli.

They do take a while to bake, so they’re definitely not “fast food” but they are worth it.


1 large sweet potato (or 3-4 large normal potatoes)

3 tbsp coconut or olive oil

1 tbsp curry powder (I use Keen’s brand, which I love)

Preheat the oven to 200C (400F).

Cut the sweet potato into long thin chips. Place them in a bowl with the oil and curry powder and toss until well combined.

Place chips in a single layer on a tray and bake them for 45 minutes. If they’re not crispy enough after this time, bake them for another 10-15 minutes.

Enjoy 🙂 I love them with homemade burgers or baked chicken.

  1. Nice! Initially I thought ‘oh, no, I’ll never make these, I hate the clean up from deep frying’ but you came good, with oven roasted fries!

  2. I make sweet potato fries too, but I usually cook them at 400F for only 10 minutes on each side and they are quite crispy; must be cut thinner! Great idea to add curry! I have tried paprika which I liked.

  3. Since I was a kid, I’ve never liked sweet potatoes. I wish I did because they are so healthy. We do however, bake/roast a lot of other veggies.

    • That’s too bad – the food I really don’t like are peas, and I haven’t liked them since I was a kid as well. I agree that any roasted veggies are great, I thought I didn’t like Brussels sprouts until I tried roasting them, they were delicious 🙂

  4. We had sweet potato fries with dinner tonight! I’ve never tried them with curry powder (I’ll give that a try next time!). Just oil and salt. Yum! One of those nights when I am wishing we had leftovers.

  5. I love sweet potato. I usually alternate between the good old plain potato and sweet potato and try and mix up the different ways of cooking them. I will be sure to give your recipes a go.
