Homemade Gift Ideas – Flavoured Salt

Flavoured salt

I had been wanting to try making flavoured salt for a while, so Christmas seemed like a great excuse to try it out. I decided to make rosemary salt because I love the distinctive flavour of rosemary, especially on roast veggies.

I found several recipes online, but decided on this one, which uses coarse-grained salt to pulverise the rosemary. If you’re not a rosemary fan, apparently you can use any other robust herb or even lemon rind, but I haven’t tried any of them out yet.

Later we were roasting some red capsicums (peppers) and Mr Omnivore suggested using the skins to make another flavour of salt instead of throwing them away. The result was a kind of smoky-flavoured salt with a hint of capsicum.

Since we had red and green coloured salts, I just had to layer them in a jar to make pretty Christmas gifts. Now we just have to keep them from moving around too much on the trip down.

Ingredients (makes about 1 cup of salt)
1/2 cup of fresh rosemary
1/2 cup coarse sea salt
Up to 1/2 cup fine salt (any kind you like)

Wash the rosemary well and leave to dry completely

Place the coarse salt and the rosemary in the food processor and pulse until both are crushed and the salt grains resemble table salt grains.

Taste. If the rosemary taste is too strong, you can “dilute” the taste by adding some fine salt to the mixture. I added about 1/2 a cup.

Leave to dry overnight, then package into airtight containers. Enjoy with roast or baked potatoes, popcorn or eggs.

I got the labels from here, printed them out on normal paper and glued them to the jars.

  1. Looks like you truly are having a homemade Christmas. Are you going to get everything made you hope for?

    • Funny you should ask that since I forgot to bring the salsa! I also didn’t make any body butter, partly because it was super-hot here and I thought it would melt and partly because I already had enough stuff. We did buy some stuff – some photo gifts, iTunes vouchers, chocolates and wine, but I’m pretty happy most of it is homemade 🙂
