Homemade body butter

I have always been fairly low maintenance when it comes to my beauty routine. I have sensitive skin so usually use one type of soap, shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser. However, as I have been trying to reduce the chemicals in our food and cleaning products, I also started reading the ridiculously long ingredient lists on my beauty products. Surely there was a simpler way to maintain my skin and hair without all of those nasty chemicals.

This was my first attempt at making body butter. I loosely followed this recipe, but used cocoa butter and coconut oil as the solids and olive oil as the liquid. I bought the cocoa butter on eBay and already had the other two ingredients. I also melted the oils in the microwave, as this was easier and less messy than using a double-boiler. The resultant lotion was a bit more solid than I expected, but I live in a climate where coconut oil turns to liquid in summer, so it will be interesting to see how the body butter lasts in summer.

This body butter can be used on your face, lips and body. You only need a tiny bit at a time, so this recipe will last a long time. You can add a couple of drops of any essential oil you want, I chose lavender because I find it calming and relaxing.

1/2 cup cocoa butter

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/8 cup olive oil

2-3 drops lavender oil

Place cocoa butter and coconut oil into a microwave-safe dish. Melt in the microwave on low/medium, stirring often.

Stir in olive oil and any essential oils you are using.

Cool oil mixture in the fridge until the oils begin to set.

Beat with an electric beater until the mixture has a butter-like consistency.

Place into a clean jar and leave to completely solidify.

I realize that these ingredients are shelf stable by themselves but do they degrade when mixing? Just wondering if I need to worry about spoilage if I leave it sitting on my bathroom counter.

    • Hi Kathy, I live in a very warm climate and I’ve left the body butter sitting on the counter for over a year with no problems. Hope this helps 🙂
